Varsity Head Coach
Coach Bill Schreier enters his twenty-ninth year as a teacher at Wheaton Warrenville South High School, where he works in the Social Studies department teaching AP Economics and Economics. He is the head coach of both the girls and boys varsity volleyball programs for the last 24 and 27 years respectively. In his twenty-four years as the girls head coach, Schreier has compiled a record of 538-333, including a 4th place finish in state during the 2002 season and a State Runner-up in 2019. On the boys’ side is where he has made his impact felt the most as he has the highest all time winning percentage ever in IHSA volleyball history with a record of 718-226. This makes him the all time winningest coach in IHSA history.
Through the twenty-seven years that Schreier has been at the helm of the boys program it has gone to meteoric heights and had success that has been unparalleled in Illinois sports history. They have made ten trips to the Elite 8 since 2001, having gone 8 consecutive years and have won 7 state championships including a three-peat in 2007, 2008 and 2009. They finished 2nd in 2010. They have also gone back to back in 2004 and 2005. Three times the Tigers have won state with an undefeated season, 2001 led by 2008 Olympic Gold medalist Sean Rooney to a 38-0 record, 2004 with a 41-0 record and then again in 2012 with a 42-0 record led by 2016 Olympic Bronze Medalist Thomas Jaeschke, culminating with the first ESPN National Championship for a team from Illinois. He has also obliterated state records for wins, appearances and state championships during the State Final tourney.
Schreier has been recognized for this exemplary record by being named Illinois Coach of the Year five times in addition to being named Mizuno National Coach of the Year in 2007, 2012 and a finalist for the Gatorade National Coach of the Year Award in 2009. Though the on the court success is good, every Tiger team that he has coached excels just as well in the classroom, having been named IHSA Team Academic after every season. The last twenty-seven years they have also been recognized nationally for this classroom success by being named Tachikara National Team Academic Award winners on both the girls and boys sides. WWS is one of nine high schools in the nation to be named for this prestigious award in both sports.
Schreier has also done a great job of building a tradition of excellence as it says on the backs of the team’s program shirts. Over the last twenty-seven years eighty of his players have gone on to play Division 1 volleyball and twenty-five have entered the coaching ranks themselves. He says, “The discipline, work ethic and passion it takes to become a Division I athlete carries over into all aspects of life, and I truly believe all our athletes will be well-prepared for anything they will face in the future. We do pride ourselves on teaching life lessons here.”
Schreier came to Wheaton Warrenville South with a veritable background of volleyball coaching experience, having coached at the club, high school and collegiate levels. Prior to joining the Tigers, Schreier was the assistant coach for the Naperville North High School boys’ volleyball team here in Chicago. Schreier spent almost four years with Sports Performance volleyball club in Aurora, Ill. and coached at various age levels, ranging from youth to elite high school teams. Three of his teams reached the USAV Junior Olympic Nationals.
A native of Downers Grove, Ill., Schreier attended Northern Illinois University and graduated in 1991 with a degree in Criminal Justice. He has since earned his master’s in Educational Leadership from Aurora University in 2001. He was also named a Fulbright Scholar in 1998 and was rewarded along with two hundred other U.S. teachers with a trip to Japan. He is most proud of his wife, Jennifer and children Caitlyn (26), Ethan (23) and Conner (20).

Sophomore
My name is Rachel Arlington and I was lucky enough to graduate from WWS in 2016 and was coached by Bill Schreier throughout my 4 years of high school. I started playing volleyball in 6th grade and have been hooked ever since. I went to play at different clubs such as IPV, SPRI, and Team One for 5 years all throughout middle school/high school. I loved how fast paced and high energy the game was. I went to the University of Iowa my freshman year and then transferred to Illinois State University to be closer to home and to fulfill my dream of being a Special Education Teacher. I played a lot of club volleyball my first couple of years in college which was so much fun and helped me still continue my passion for the game. I graduated Illinois State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Special Education and continued my education and received my Masters Degree in May 2024 in Curriculum and Instruction from Olivet Nazarene University.
I am so excited to coach the Sophomore Team and really work towards embedding all of the values and principles that drove my passion for teaching and coaching.
Freshman A
I moved to Winfield in 1973 from Michigan. Went to West Chicago HS 78-82. Where I played football for four years and shot and discus in track. Graduated in 1982 and went on to Western Illinois University where I played two years of football before playing for the WIU volleyball club. After graduating I got a job at health club in Carol Stream where I ran in to the leader of the Wheaton Central HS FCA. He told me that they were starting a boys volleyball team and if I was interested in coaching. So I got together with Daryl Fitts and I started coaching the boys in 1989. Then in the fall of 89 they asked if I wanted to coach in the girls program. I coached the boys for about 13 years and continue to coach the girls for over 25 years. I also started coaching at Sports Performance Volleyball Club in 1989 and am still there. There, I have been part of several National Championships (5 consecutive from 2019 to present) and numerous other medals.
The biggest reward is watching the kids develop and achieve great things. On the boys side watching them win a three-peat in 2007-2009. On the girls side watching them win conference several times and in 2019 winning regionals, sectionals, super sectionals and finishing 2nd in state.
I worked in the Fire Department as a lieutenant and paramedic for around 20 years.
Currently I work for Gridconnect a computer engineering company.
